Madonna Tries to Save World With Crappy Song
PUNTOS:1 DE 5 estrellas
Yes, we know Madonna's new song "Hey You" is a charity single in support of the climate-conscious "Live Earth" concerts. We know it has "a message." But that's no excuse—it's a ghastly example of ice-cold schmaltz masquerading as a global band-aid. While people are quick to give charity songs with messages a pass ("it's not great...but, you know, it's for a good cause...and it's from the heart"), we actually feel tracks like this one should be held under more scrutiny than your typical Madonna disco-dance single. Co-produced by Pharrell Williams, "Hey You" features the same marching snares and triangle hits he used on Gwen's "Wind It Up." But whereas that track was weird and goofy, "Hey You" is a slice of treacle only Celine Dion could love; The synth-string backdrop sounds like something from the triumphant finale of a Mario Bros. game. And the cloying nonsense lyrics are worse. "First love yourself then you can love someone else," sings Madge in regal tones—is she trying to save the world from global warming or auditioning to become the next Dr. Phil? It doesn't have to be this way. Successful message songs should involve pathos, anger or, at the very least, some kind of uplifting sing-along. If this is the type
