The lowdown on Private Practice from actress Kate Walsh
on Tuesday 8 July 2008
When Addison Montgomery Shepherd

first appeared on our screens in Grey’s Anatomy, it was hard to warm to her - how could we love anyone who would cheat on McDreamy with McSteamy??
Nevertheless, somehow she wormed her way into our affections and now she has earned her own spin-off, Private Practice.
We had a lot of questions for actress Kate Walsh when we got the chance to interview her, like how did she respond to the idea of leaving Seattle Grace when it was first pitched to her? What does she miss about her Grey’s Anatomy co-stars? And what exactly is in store for season one of the critically acclaimed show? Read on for all the answers…
Let’s go back to the beginning… How did Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes explain this new spin-off show to you?
Shonda brought me into her office and I thought I was in trouble because the boss doesn’t call you into her office for nothing. We had already heard a rumour in our contract renegotiations that they wanted to do a spin-off, but none of us really knew anything about it,
so it came as a great surprise when she sat me down and told me that she wanted to spin Addison off to this practice in Los Angeles. I left my body a little bit and nodded away.

I was obviously very excited and nervous and curious about it, but that’s how it all started.
Character-wise and story-wise, it made sense to me because I feel like my character had done all she had to do at Seattle Grace, so it was an interesting idea to move her out to greener pastures.
Was it a bit of a guilty pleasure because you moved on to a spin-off and the others stayed with Grey’s Anatomy?
Not so much because
I think Grey’s Anatomy is an amazing show and it’s really geared towards the interns and not my character. I feel like the interns have such rich storylines and so much to do between the five of them, that it was like being a parent on that show.
I didn’t feel too guilty. Will any of the other actors from Grey’s Anatomy cross over to Private Practice?
I don’t know. Right now we’re just focusing on establishing the show. We’ve got around nine series regulars here, so that’s a lot to get going with – plus there’s our guest cast, too.
It’s not Grey’s Anatomy II. It’s a different programme. It still has that Shonda Rhimes writing of comedy and pathos all seamlessly blended together,
but I think we have enough on our plate for now. Mind you, I’m not in Shonda’s head. Anything’s possible. What do you miss the most about your Grey’s cast mates? I miss all of them.
It’s sort of like leaving the nest. I felt like much more of a big family there –
but this feels much more like I have a real job with much more responsibility. It’s a lot more physical work, so I just miss being able to play around a little more, you know. What have you heard from the Grey’s cast about Private Practice?
I’ve heard really great things, actually.
It was very touching because Katherine Heigl called and left me like the most delicious message. It’s always nice to hear from your peers –
and I think both she and TR Knight are totally hooked on the show and love it.
I get calls from them every week after it airs and they’re totally into it and happy for me. Yeah.
Those are the two that I hear from – and Justin
. It’s all been good so far.
Katherine Heigl has openly revealed that she would love to guest star on Private Practice…
Really? Wow. Well, I think there’s a possibility for any of them to pop to LA. And like I said, I just don’t know who or when that would be. I would think any of them to be viable candidates, though.
Why do you think the show works so well?
You never really know why a show works or why it doesn’t.
Some of it is magic. Some of it is obviously the great writing – but I do think the cast has a great chemistry.
Beyond that, it’s a little more of an adult show. You will still see adults behaving childishly, but there’s a quicker turnaround. On Grey’s you see these young doctors approaching their medicine and then they kind of break down and melt down. Here it happens a little quicker. As you get older and more adept at our professions, you can quickly put on your professional face and switch back to your personal persona much more adeptly and quickly.
These characters are all really different and appealing. They’re not just prototypes from the first show transferred on to new actors. They’re all completely new characters and they’re all at different phases in their life, which I think people can identify with. There are single parents, divorced parents, someone with a weird, crazy Internet addiction.

(Awwww mi Coop) The classic psychiatrist is a mess herself,
but I think it’s all written in a very intelligent, fresh way. Can you tell us a bit more about your co-stars on the show? In this show, Paul Adelstein plays Cooper – and he’s a really good pal.
I have literally known him for 15 years. We went back to Chicago and waited tables together and did theatre together, so that’s really fun. We were both struggling, crazy little actors and terrible waiters.

I literally got him a job at this restaurant, so it’s great that we are on the same show now. We’ve actually done television shows together before. We’ve never actually done scenes together, but we’ve done movies together, so that’s been a huge thrill.
And then there’s Tim Daly who I worked with on
The Fugitive and then on
Eyes. I played his estranged wife –
and I was thrilled to have him back.
I’ve been fans of everyone else on the show. I love Judging Amy and Amy Brenneman. I love her. She’s so delicious and Audra McDonald, too. It felt like Christmas

to get this whole new cast that are sickly talented to work.
It felt really exciting. Taye Diggs, Chris Lowell and KaDee Strickland… It’s been really amazing. Was it a smart move for Addison to venture away from Seattle or should she have stayed on and tried to deal with the McDreamy/McSteamy situation? No, I think it was definitely a smart move. Don’t you? How much longer can we go back and forth between McDreamy and McSteamy? It’s really a selfless venture for me. Those two really deserve to move on. I thought it was a smart move and it’s always a risk, but it seems like it’s working out thus far.
I also think it’s also an interesting idea to take someone who is 39 and successful in their career, but with a failed marriage who just picks up and goes off. I think it’s a fantasy that a lot of people have, so to play that out and see how that looks is a goal of mine.
Do you think Addison will find love in Private Practice? She’s certainly had a difficult time with Mark…
I don’t know. I would hope so, but I think it’s going to be a bumpy ride to get there. No pun intended. I think that so many people have weird dating patterns. It doesn’t all of a sudden clean up because you move to a different city. And that’s part of the fun of LA.
Dating in LA is absurd.

It’s like
Blade Runner.
You never know what creatures you’re going to end up with.

So I think that that’s really an interesting storyline to investigate and see her trying to figure out the Los Angeles dating pool.
What advice would you give Addison in terms of love, life and career?
I don’t know. I guess I’d tell her to slow down, loosen up and think before she acts.
She seems to be a little impetuous at times. Do you understand Addison’s urge to have a baby at this point in her life? For sure. I have friends who adamantly don’t want children but they still think about it. We get to pretty much choose whatever we want to do,
but when the biological clock comes and takes away the choice of having a child, then I think everybody examines it. I can definitely identify with that.
How much does Addison believe in the holistic approach to well-being herself?
Addison definitely does not believe in it. She’s very sceptical and thinks things like,
‘That’s very sweet and cute. When you’re done playing your little games, let’s get back to real medicine.’
I think that’s actually one of the things that we’re finding in the show. We have this group of doctors who work together, but
they don’t always get along and there is the conflict within the practice. When you have eight doctors in the practice, and that’s eight big egos

, it doesn’t matter how touchy-feely and communistic we all are, there’s got to be conflict there.
Do you have any input into your character’s wardrobe?
I have a good deal of input.
Addison moves to LA, so she changes things and softens up a little bit. She softens the look of her wardrobe. Our new set has a lot of colour, so we’re working to find a balance and find that feel of co-op medicine, which is a little more relaxed and less formal than a hospital. We’re not wearing white coats, that’s for sure.
If you had to go to the doctor, would you rather go to the hospital in Seattle or to the wellness centre in LA? As a patient, what would you prefer?
That’s interesting.
I would probably go to the wellness centre personally. It’s a little more relaxed and not serious. I mean, just look at the colour scheme.
