In the July issue of SELF, Fergie talks candidly about her struggle with her crystal meth addiction and how she recovered. In this exclusive excerpt from her interview with SELF senior staff writer Erin Bried, she shares her life motto, reveals her favorite indulgence and tells us what she sent Alanis Morissette as a thank-you for covering her song "My Humps."

SELF: Where do you like to work out?
Fergie: Traveling and being in hotel gyms all the time, I like to get out in the world and feel seminormal. I try not to let the papparazi keep me in, so I've kind of learned to let go of some of my vanity. Some of the pictures I see of myself aren't the most flattering, but they're actually very freeing. I'm starting to feel more comfortable in my own skin. Whatever picture they can get can't be worse than some of the ones I've seen. Also, I'm a singer, not a model, so my whole career doesn't depend on if I look perfect all the time. So working out is for me. It's at the top of my list. Whenever I do a self-inventory, that's something I list as very important.

SELF: What do you mean doing your "self-inventory?"
Fergie: It's making sure that I'm keeping my side of the street clean. I try to make sure that problems aren't coming to me because of things that I am doing. Problems and conflicts are always going to come in life, but if you're doing the things you're supposed to, you can never be angry at yourself. Things aren't always going to go your way. I've been on a very lucky streak lately—I am happy about that. But there will be times when things aren't going to go my way—and you still have to feel comfortable with yourself in those times as well.

SELF: If you had a life motto, what would it be?
Fergie: "God's rejections are God's protections." You can ask for things, and if it doesn't happen, I've realized that there is a reason. I might not know the reason yet, but usually I'll figure it out later.

SELF: Can you give me an example of when this came to be?
Fergie: When I left Wild Orchid, which was a singing group, I was dead set on making a solo album. I never knew I was going to join another band. Then I started with the Black Eyed Peas and now I can't imagine not being in this band. It has made me such a better artist, with so much more confidence.

SELF: What do you wish you could go back and tell your 20-year-old self?
Fergie: Sunscreen and eye cream!

SELF: What is your favorite indulgence?
Fergie: Indian curry. A cheat? Yeah, definitely! I love chicken tikka masala with tomato cream sauce, fragrant rice and naan bread. There's protein in there, but it's still full of fat and carbs. But it's just so delicious that I have to have it once in a while.

SELF: Why did you change your name to Fergie?
Fergie: I wanted to have a fresh start from all that I'd been through. It took me a while to think of it, but then it was so easy because my best friend calls me Fergie all the time. It's just a common nickname for Ferguson, and I thought, Wow, that could be cool. It just stuck.

SELF: What are your upcoming goals personally and professionally?
Fergie: My personal goal is to be consistent with my health. I don't want to do something for a month and not do it the next month—I want to be consistent. I also want to gradually take on bigger roles in films and really create the time to work on them. And I want to have a great tour and more solo albums. I also want a healthy, successful marriage and children. And I want to be able to do things for others.

SELF: Those are pretty great goals.
Fergie: Yeah, to me that is a pretty fulfilled life.

SELF: What do you like to do at home?
Fergie: I like to play music. I like to take my time when I clean out my drawers and boxes. Take a shower, put on a face mask, light candles. I like to be very relaxed.

SELF: Alanis Morissette covered "My Humps." Did you talk to her about it?
Fergie: Yeah, I sent her a cake in the shape of a derriere, and she sent me a very sweet reply. I have a lot of respect for Alanis. She's one of my songwriting idols. I love her because she's not afraid to take risks.

SELF: Do you bring anything on the road to remind yourself of home?
Fergie: I take a lot of bags with a lot of my clothes. I spread them all over the hotel room in piles so it feels like I have a closet. I get a creative burst when I pick out outfits. It's one of my healthy creative outlets. It's putting things together—it gives me a thrill.

SELF: Would you say that you have a positive body image? What advice would you give to other women who are struggling with their body image?
Fergie: I think I have a normal body image. Like every other girl, those last 5 to 10 pounds keep fluctuating. And of course we always think that we can be something better. But I have accepted who I am. I've definitely gone through phases of wanting something I didn't have. I think you would be abnormal if you never had moments like that. But I've grown into loving who I am. When I'm working out, I get really proud of myself. Even though there are always things you want to change, I still feel good about myself because I know I'm doing everything in my power to be healthy.

SELF: Do you like to eat black-eyed peas?
Fergie: I'm the only member of the band who likes them

una de las cosas muy importantes q ella dice es q se aprendio a amar a ella misma...y de conformarse con lo q es de ella y no querer ser algo mas...y q cuando ella ve las fotos de cuando hace gimnasia y cosas asi...ve q sale mal pero no lo importa porq ella no es una modelo q depende de como este fisicamente

y en mi opinion no sale mal en esas fotos jaja

SELF: ¿Donde Te gusta ejercitarte?

Fergie: Viajando y llendo a los gyms del hotel toda la hora, tengo gusto de salir x el mundo y de sentirme seminormal. Intento no dejar a los papparazi, que me invadan demasiado, pero estoy aprendiendo a dejar un poco de lado mi vanidad.Algunas de las fotos que veo no son de im agrado,pero realmente muy están liberando. Estoy comenzando a sentirme más cómoda en mi propia piel. Cualquier foto que pueden conseguir no puede ser peor que algunas de las he visto. También, soy cantante, no una modelo, así que mi carrera entera no depende de si parezco perfecta a toda la hora. Entonces ejercitarme esta en el primer lugar de mi lista.Siempre hago mi propio inventario, eso yo lo veo como algo importante.

SELF: ¿Y que significa para ti "hacer su propio inventario"?

Fergie: Me estoy cerciorando de que estoy manteniendo limpio mi imagen en las calles. Intento cerciorarme de que los problemas no están viniendo a mí debido a las cosas que estoy haciendo. Los problemas y los conflictos van siempre a venir en la vida, pero si estás haciendo las cosas que te suponen, puedes nunca estar enojado contigo mismo.
Las cosas no van siempre a ir tu manera.He estado en una raya muy afortunada ultimamente -estoy feliz x eso-
Pero habrá las épocas en que las cosas no van a ir mi manera y tmb tienes que sentirse cómodo con estas esas épocas.

SELF: ¿Si tuvieras un lema en la vida, cuál sería?

Fergie: Los “rechazamientos de dios son protecciones de dios.” Puedes pedir cosas, y si no sucede, para mí hay una razón.
Puede ser que no sepa la razón todavía, pero la calcularé más adelante.

SELF: ¿Puedes darme un ejemplo de cuando esto sucedió?

Fergie: Cuando dejé Wild Orchid, que era un grupo de cantantes, yo nunca pensé que iba a entrar en otra banda.
Entonces comenzé con Black Eyed Peas... y ahora no puedo imaginarme el no estar en esta banda.
Me ha hecho una mejor artista, y con mucho mas confianza.

SELF: ¿Que desearías si pudieras volver atrás a tus 20 años de edad?

Fergie:Sunscreen y helado!

SELF: ¿Cuál es tu indulgencia preferida?

Fergie: Curry indio. ¿Un tramposo? ¡Sí, definitivamente!
Amo el pollo con tikka masala, con la salsa de crema de tomate, el arroz fragante y el pan naan. Hay proteína allí adentro, pero sigue siendo llena de grasa y de carbs.Pero es tan delicioso que tengo q tenerlo de vez en cuando.

SELF: ¿Por qué cambiaste tu nombre a Fergie?

Fergie: Deseé tener un comienzo fresco de todos que había había tenido.Me tomó un rato para pensar en él, pero fue tan fácil porque mi mejor amigo me llama Fergie todo el tiempo.
Es justo un apodo común para Ferguson.. i pensé! wow! eso puede ser cool!
Acaba de pegarse

SELF: ¿Cuáles son tus metas próximas personalmente y profesionalmente?

Fergie: Mi meta personal es ser constante con mi salud. No deseo hacer algo por un mes y no hacerlo que el mes próximo. Yo deseo ser constante.
También deseo adquirir gradualmente papeles más grandes en películas y realmente crear la época de trabajar en ellas.
Deseo tener un gran tour y un nuevo album solista.
También deseo tener una relacion sana.. un exitoso casamiento.. y niños.
Y deseo poder hacer cosas para otros.

SELF: Ésas son metas bastante grandes

Fergie: Para mi eso es una bonita y satisfecha vida.

SELF: ¿Que te gusta hacer cuando estas en casa?

Fergie: Me gusta escuchar música. Tengo gusto de tomar mi tiempo para limpiar mis cajones y cajas.
Tomar una ducha, ponerme una mascara para la cara,y encender velas ligeras. Me gusta estar muy relajada.

SELF: Alanis Morrisette hizo una cover de "My Humps" ¿Hablaste con ella sobre eso?

Fergie: Si, le envié una torta con forma de derriere. y ella me envió una contestación muy dulce. Tengo mucho respeto x Alanis.
Ella es una de mis idolas que escriben canciones.
Yo la amo por que ella no tiene miedo de tomar riesgos.

SELF: ¿Traes algo de tu hogar para recorldarlo cuando no estas?

Fergie: Tomo muchos bolsos con muchas de mis ropas. Las separo por todas partes el cuarto del hotel en pilas así se siente como que tengo un armario. Tengo una explosión creativa cuando selecciono los equipos. Es uno de mis enchufes creativos mas sanos.
Poner las cosas juntas me da emoción.

SELF: ¿Dirías que tienes una imagen positiva de tu cuerpo? ¿Qué consejo darías a otras mujeres que están luchando con su imagen?

Fergie: Pienso que tengo una imagen normal.Como cada muchacha, esas 5 a 10 libras pasadas guardan el fluctuar.Y por supuesto pensamos siempre que podemos ser algo mejor. Pero he aceptado quiéne soy. He pasado definitivamente x fases de desear algo que no tenía.
Pienso que serías anormal si nunca tenías momentos como eso. Pero he crecido en amar quiénes soy. Cuando me estoy ejercitando.. me pongo realmente orgullosa de mi misma.
Aun cuando hay cosas que deseo cambiar, yo todavía me siento bien sobre mi, porque se que estoy haciendo todo en mi poder para ser sana.

SELF: ¿Te gusta comer Black Eyed Peas?

Fergie: Si, soy el unico mimebro de la banda que tiene gusto x ellos.
